Mediterranean & ISTRIA CYCLING

A year-round cycling destination. A place where the Adriatic Sea meets olive groves, vineyards and a pleasant climate, a place to enjoy cycling adventures and the beauty of Mediterranean Slovenia.

ABOUT THE MEDITERRANEAN AND ISTRIAN REGION

Slovenia has a short but delightful coastline. Sitting close to the Gulf of Trieste between Italy and Croatia this 47 kilometres of Adriatic coastline give Slovenia the busy port at Koper (Capodistria to the Italians), the gorgeous and picturesque Venetian town of Piran and the popular seaside resorts of Portoroz and Izola.

Only a few kilometres inland and you will enter a region with authentic rural hilltop villages, vineyards and lush valleys. The perfect contrast with the busier coastal strip, from where you can experience a fantastic views. Istria is bigger area around, actually it is a Peninsula, positioned in a small part on Slovenian ground and bigger part in Croatia.

All the region is well known for cycling activities, many international clubs are taking advantage of its climate and proximity to inland countries of Europe. Climate is gorgeous, you can have a bike ride there almost all year. Nice scenic roads, very attractive sights and cultural monuments, such as odl salt fields or picturesce harbours with old fishing boats.

UNFORGETTABLE SCENERY

The Slovenian coast is inviting due to its charming coastal towns and unforgettable experiences in the sea and on the coast. Evening lights at the sea. Romantic sundown photo. Or the beauty of an old olive tree. I+If you move just slightly inland, the idyllic appearance of the continental areas of the coast will also take your breath away. The beautiful Istrian villages, which shelter numerous cultural treasures, selected goods produced in Istrian soil, and friendly locals will be deeply ingrained in your memories. You shell be present here, especially at the end of August, when the harvest takes place in vineyards. And in the autumn, when the smoke tree comes alive with its red colour . We have even one bike tour revoted to this red color. Yes…and when you can witness olive picking in olive grove.

GOURMET EXPERIENCE

Fish, calamari, mussels – typical delights from the Adriatic Sea, salted using the famous Piran salt, share their place on the tables of Mediterranean Slovenia with various dishes, such as the typical home-made pasta and fusi, spring omelettes – frtalje with wild asparagus and other greens from nature. You shell try a bread with olives from Istrian olive trees growing on sun-kissed hillsides. One great specialty …

Fuži (pasta fusi) with truffles

Boil the water for the fusi and add a bit of olive oil, then proceed to cook them. Rinse the cooked fusi with warm water and add a spoon of olive oil and a little of the water from the cooking. Rend the truffles and fry them for a few minutes on butter, then add cream. When the cream becomes dense (add wine if it’s too dense), add the salt and pepper, yolk and give it a good mix. Pour the dressing over the pasta and sprinkle with grated parmigiano.

GREAT FOR YOUR HEALTH

WATER: Every year most of the bathing areas and the marina are awarded a blue flag, which is an international ecological symbol denoting the quality of natural bathing areas and marinas.

FOOD: If we acknowledge the proverb »Tell me what you eat and I will tell you where you are from!« then our coastal area is without doubt juicy, colourful, tasty and diverse. Mediterranean cuisine is acknowledged as one of the healthiest diets and has surely left its mark on our northernmost location. Our local and natural produce, most notably salt, olives, fresh fruit and vegetables, rich wines and other tasty gifts of the sea and hinterland, combine well with a pinch of indigenous Mediterranean spices and fragrances.
